KUCHING: Sarawak aims to secure at least half of the 488 gold medals in the events contested during the upcoming 2024 Malaysian Games (SUKMA), according to Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.

He said this aligns with the aspirations of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and MYSED Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“As such, we aspire to achieve this target, which would give Sarawak the opportunity to become the overall champion in the upcoming SUKMA,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters during the Gawai Dayak Open House at the residence of former deputy chief minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Alfred Jabu Numpang here on Saturday (June 1).

At the same time, Rentap expressed his confidence on Sarawak’s boxing contingent, which has shown promising performance during training.

However, he advised the contingent to not become complacent and continue to do their best, especially on August 17, to clinch the championship in the sport.

“Our boxing contingent’s preparation is very encouraging, and we hope they can further improve until the day of the competition, eventually bringing home gold in the event.

“Similarly, other sports also show good and impressive results during training sessions,” he added.

Rentap also urged Sarawakians to extend their full support to the teams competing.

“Support among athletes and from the public is crucial for achieving victory,” he added.
