KUCHING: Sarawak successfully planted 35 million trees in 2024, surpassing the target set by the federal government.
Deputy Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications (Utilities), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the campaign to plant 100 million trees in Malaysia, with 35 million trees to be planted in Sarawak, was originally scheduled to end in 2030.
However, he said Sarawak, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has worked hard and achieved this goal this year with cooperation from all participating parties, especially government and private agencies.
He said the goal of the Sarawak government is to become the greenest state in Malaysia and even in the world by 2027.
Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also the Pantai Damai assemblyman, said this when speaking at the Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Tree Planting Campaign ceremony at SK Gersik, here, on Thursday (July 18).
During the event, a total of 140 trees were planted around the school, officiated by Dr Abdul Rahman.
To date, SEB has planted 140,000 trees throughout Sarawak, and Dr Abdul Rahman is optimistic that SEB can double this campaign by targeting 500,000 trees planted by 2030.
