The Sarawak Sustainability Insight (SSI) represents a pivotal advancement in Sarawak’s journey toward sustainable development.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that the event transcends a mere gathering; it is a crucial platform for nurturing dialogue, sharing knowledge, and fostering collaborations on sustainability initiatives.

By convening diverse perspectives, he affirmed that the state government can refine its strategies and actions towards a more sustainable future.

Abang Johari underscored this point, highlighting Sarawak’s unique geographical position, abundant natural resources, and vibrant cultural legacy, offering immense opportunities and significant challenges for sustainable development.

“Our verdant rainforests and diverse biodiversity, among the oldest globally, necessitate meticulous management to ensure their preservation alongside fostering economic growth.

“As we explore these opportunities, we must proactively address the challenges of climate change and resource depletion.

“Historically, Sarawak has made remarkable progress in its developmental journey. From the early days of resource extraction to emerging as a pioneer in sustainable practices, we have reached significant milestones that mirror our dedication to harmonizing economic growth with environmental stewardship,” he articulated.

He presented these comments during his keynote speech at the Sarawak Sustainability Insights 2024 event held today (Oct 29) at the Pullman Hotel.

In light of the event, he urged attendees to actively engage in the forthcoming panel discussions, where innovative ideas and solutions can help advance the state’s collective aspirations.

“I urge each one present here today to join us in our sustainability voyage, one that demands a unified effort across all sectors.

“I urge all participants to partake in meaningful dialogues during this conference. Let us collaborate efficiently as partners in progress, exchanging insights and forging partnerships that will drive us towards achieving our ambitious sustainability goals.

“Let us commit to transforming our vision into reality through resolute action and effective implementation, to shape the sustainable future we envision today,” he expressed.

Meanwhile, during a press briefing, Abang Johari remarked that Sarawak is fortunate to possess resources that can be harnessed to propel economic development and elevate people’s incomes.

“We are working closely with experts on these critical matters, and I will certainly incorporate their viewpoints in shaping policies for Sarawak,” he added.

He stressed that these resources should be evaluated using innovative approaches to boost incomes while maintaining sustainability.
“That is why, at this conference, we have invited all experts to share their perspectives on managing a novel economic paradigm grounded in sustainability, where no one is left behind.

“The cornerstone of our approach is education. We must enlighten our populace, bestowing upon them the gift of knowledge, empowering them to leverage their learning for self-improvement while safeguarding the environment,” he concluded.
