KUCHING: Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that Sarawak will continue to have only one session for Friday prayers.
“In our previous discussion, we decided to continue having only single sessions for our Friday prayers here in Sarawak,” he said today.
The previous muzakarah (discussion) on the guidelines for Friday prayers decided not to hold two sessions for Friday prayers.
“We have allowed a few surau to perform Friday prayers for densely populated areas,” he added.
The permission to perform Friday prayers at the surau is only temporary as it is to meet the needs of the people.
The list of surau allowed to perform Friday prayers will be consulted with the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (Jais).
There are new Covid-19 clusters detected in Kuching but the number of people allowed to perform Friday prayers remains the same for now.
“We are observing the situation closely and any changes will be notified via Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) circulars,” he said.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said that the decision on splitting Friday prayers into two sessions depends on the religious authorities of each state.
