KUCHING: The Sarawak government is expected to introduce a new law on energy to protect the state’s interest in the new economy.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the government will table the Bill in the next Sarawak legislative assembly (DUN) sitting.
“This is how we develop green energy; whereby we need a law to protect the interest of our state in such (green energy) development,” he said.
The Bill, he said, once approved, is expected to further increase the state’s revenue.
“I don’t have the exact figure yet (increase), but I am sure it will be in line with our aspiration and direction towards a high-income state by 2030.
“Anyway, let me do the work first,” he told the reporters after attending the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) special convention in conjunction with 60 years of Sarawak’s independence held at the party headquarters here today.
Earlier, he also said the state government was looking into making use of wastes to generate energy through the process of biomass.
Apart from that, he also shared about how Sweden managed to have 45,000 MW installed power capacity generated from rivers through the construction of cascading dams.
Sarawak, he said, has a lot of rivers, which have the potential to build such dams as well, to generate electricity.
Such a method, he said, will not affect the settlement of local communities; while the additional electricity can be exported to other surrounding countries.
“This is another potential area which can increase our revenue as well,” he added.
