LIMBANG: The Sarawak government plans to meet 50 per cent of the needs for beef, goat and buffalo meat in the state by the year 2030 through the Farming Transformation Programme.
Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Unggah Embas, revealed this at the Pesta Badudun and Buffalo Racing Festival at Kampung Telahak here on Sunday.
Under the 11th Malaysia Plan, RM17 million had been allocated to develop the buffalo industry in Sarawak and RM10 million for subsidies, he added.
According to Douglas, there were about 400 buffalo breeders in Limbang.
He said the State Veterinary Department had been directed to develop the husbandry industry in Sarawak including making Limbang the hub for supply of buffaloes in the country.
The stingless bee industry, Douglas added, had great potential based on the research carried out by the government.
Also present at the Pesta were Assistant Minister for Welfare and Community Wellbeing, Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Assistant Minister for Rural Economy (Coastal Areas) and Fisheries, Datuk Julaihi Narawi, Limbang Member of Parliament, Hasbi Habibollah and Batu Danau State Assemblyman, Paulus Gumbang.
