KUCHING: The number of teacher vacancies under the Special Sarawak Recruitment initiative, previously offered by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) and the Education Services Commission (SPP), has increased to 2,180, up from the initial 1,140 positions.
Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD) Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the new figure following a meeting between his ministry and the SPP yesterday (Sept 19).
He noted that the recruitment drive has garnered significant interest, with over 15,000 applicants from Sarawak alone and an additional 2,000 from other parts of Malaysia.
“We initially offered 1,140 positions for the Special Sarawak Teacher Recruitment.
“However, after the meeting with SPP yesterday, it was decided that 2,180 teachers will be recruited under this initiative for the year,” he told a press conference on the Sarawak Career and Training Fair (SCaT Fair) 2024 at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here today.
On the recruitment process, Sagah said that candidates who have passed the preliminary screening were recently called for an online psychometric test.
Following that, he assured the shortlisted candidates will be invited for in-person interviews.
“Those selected for physical interviews will be assessed to determine their suitability for the available positions,” he added.
Meanwhile, it is understood that approximately 6,000 candidates who pass the psychometric test will be invited for interviews, which are scheduled to take place in the second week of October.
The interviews will be held across three locations in Kuching, Sibu, and Miri.
According to the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS), the state is expected to face a shortage of 2,373 teachers by the end of this year.
