THE Sarawak government, through an appointed Regulator, will ensure sustainable growth and effective management of the rapidly expanding hydrogen industry.
The Regulator, who will oversee hydrogen-related activities in Sarawak, is well-positioned as a leader in hydrogen production, distribution, and export by enacting policies and providing oversight that drive industry development and economic prosperity.
According to Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahmad, entrusting the Regulator to issuing licences for key hydrogen-related activities will incorporate hydrogen production and has the right to grant permits for the construction, operation and maintenance of hydrogen production facilities.
“Licensing will encompass hydrogen production from various feedstocks, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety standards while encouraging innovation in production strategies.
“He also has the right to grant permits for the construction, operation and maintenance of hydrogen production facilities supporting the development of a robust and resilient hydrogen infrastructure in Sarawak,” he said in the August House.
Meanwhile, he said licensing includes using facilities and secure hydrogen storage, minimising the risk and ensuring availability.
“The Regulator will oversee the licenses for distribution, transport, and export of hydrogen, facilitating seamless integration into regional and global markets and positioning Sarawak as a prominent hydrogen exporter.
“They have the right to issue licenses for commercial sale and use of hydrogen with sectors like transportation, power or electrical generation, and industrial applications, supporting our transition to a low-carbon economy,” he added.
Furthermore, Safiee believes that Sarawak is ready to drive substantial economic growth by optimising market dynamics and ensuring a prosperous economy through its ongoing commitment to Environmental Sustainability.
“We are positioned to create numerous job opportunities in hydrogen production, distribution, and infrastructure development, which provides skill development and long-term employment to uplift living standards and communities within the workforce.
“Hydrogen economy ensures economic gains remain within our borders, reinforce the economy through locally driven growth, and by establishing export capability, Sarawak will boost state and national economic growth, positioning Sarawak as a global leader in clean energy and generate continuous revenue,” he expressed.
