KUCHING: All Sarawak athletes who won medals at the recent SEA Games in Manila will be rewarded, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
“We have not discussed that yet but definitely the state government will give them some form of incentives,” Karim told reporters at Tasik Danu Serian yesterday before joining 300 big bikers for the DurianDurian Ride.
The minister said several Sarawak athletes made waves at the national and international events this year, adding that he was very happy with their achievements.
“Sarawak has been producing many good athletes thus far but of course there is still room for improvement,” said Karim.
He urged the athletes and sport associations to work harder to improve their performance.
He said 2020 will be another busy and challenging year for Sarawak athletes and sport associations as Sarawak will be sending a contingent to the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Johore. “We hope to do better in Johor and I am confident we can achieve our target if we work smart,” he said.
Karim added that the ministry and sport associations must also work harder to assist their athletes in achieving their goals.
Malaysia ended their campaign in the 30th Sea Games in the Philippines with a total haul of 55 gold medals, far short of the 70 the contingent aimed for. Malaysia finally collected 55 gold, 58 silver and 71 bronze medals.
