KUCHING: Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah expressed admiration for Malaysian diving queen Datuk Pandelela Rinong’s illustrious career in diving, highlighting her significant contributions to Malaysia’s sporting achievements.
“Pandelela has been an exemplary athlete for over 15 years, representing Malaysia in numerous Olympic Games. Despite not making it to the recent Olympics, her achievements have brought honour to our nation,” he said.
He lauded Pandelela for her pivotal role in securing Malaysia’s first diving medals, stating, “She has been instrumental in putting Malaysia on the diving map, clinching both silver and bronze medals.”
Reflecting on the athlete’s multifaceted impact, he noted that her educational pursuits were facilitated by sports.
“Beyond her sporting achievements, her dedication has enabled her to pursue higher education, showcasing the holistic benefits of sports,” he remarked.
Responding to inquiries about Pandelela’s potential transition into coaching, Abdul Karim emphasised the importance of allowing Pandelela to make her own decisions.
“We respect Pandelela’s decision in deciding her future endeavours. Whether she chooses to continue competing or contribute as a coach, we support her fully,” he affirmed.
“Pandelela’s expertise and experience make her a valuable asset not only to Malaysia but potentially to other countries as well. We leave the decision in her capable hands,” he concluded.
Pandelela and Nur Dhabitah Sabri failed in their bid for a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics after finishing 12th in the 10m Platform Synchronised diving event at the World Aquatics Championships (WAC) in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday.
