MIRI: Sarawak celebrated a historic victory on Sunday evening as 18-year-old Eidelweiss Franzel Francey Sami secured the state’s first-ever gold medal in karate at the Sukma Games, ending a 24-year-long wait.

Competing in the female individual kumite 68kg category, Eidelweiss delivered a stunning performance at the IKBN Miri, defeating Terengganu’s Mirza Amirah Syuhada Mohd Faizal in the final.

This victory marks Sarawak’s first gold in karate since the sport was introduced to the Sukma Games in 2000.

In addition to this milestone, Sarawak’s Ethan Iskandar Mohamat added to the state’s medal tally by securing a bronze medal in the male individual kumite 84kg category.

Expressing his excitement, Sarawak’s Sukma karate coach Jarvis Julian reflected on the significance of the achievements.

“Since Sukma introduced karate in 2000, we had only managed to secure silver medals. This is the first time we’ve won gold. It’s been a long journey, and I’m overwhelmed with emotion,” he said.

Jarvis  thanked to everyone who has supported the team over the years, including the Sarawak Karatedo Association, which has been instrumental in fostering local talent.

“We’ve come close to winning gold on several occasions, but today, Eidelweiss made history –not just for herself, but for all Sarawakians. This gold medal is a perfect gift for everyone who believed in us,” he added.

Jarvis urged the team to maintain their momentum as the competition continues, with the men and women’s team events scheduled for the following day.

Eidelweiss’ victory not only broke Sarawak’s gold medal drought in karate but also set a new benchmark for the sport in the state. Alongside Ethan Iskandar’s bronze, these achievements are expected to inspire future generations of karatekas.
