KUCHING: The sovereignty of Sarawak is a collective responsibility, says a minister, and unity among its citizens must be upheld.

Officiating at the Padawan Municipal Council lunar new year celebration here, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the state government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) was fighting for more oil royalty than the existing 5 per cent, from the federal government.

“This is Sarawak oil, not Malaysia oil. It belongs to the children of Sarawak, the right of every Sarawakian born. We need youths to stand for Sarawak as the sovereignty of Sarawak is a responsibility together.”

The Local Government and Housing minister also said that the money would be used to upgrade council services throughout the city such as the IPeople app launched by the Kuching South City Council for residents to submit feedback on issues.

“Although with only 5 per cent revenue from our oil and gas industry, the state government still can allocate RM60 million to six city councils to improve their services,” he said yesterday.

He also urged the public to reach out and serve in the state government sector.

“I am also proud that after the last election, finally Sarawak has its own party, GPS, which is not confined to federal parties anymore but Sarawak’s own.”

Dr Sim said there were around 1,500 posts available in the state civil service, and he urged the public from different backgrounds to apply.
