KUCHING: The Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project is one of the initiatives taken by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to reduce traffic congestion in the city.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the project would benefit Sarawakians greatly.

“Of course, when people heard about the proposed project for the first time, they seemed to see it in a negative way but when they really understand that it will benefit them, they will see it positively.”

Fatimah was speaking to reporters yesterday following Abang Johari’s recent visit to China to get acquainted with the ART model that would be implemented along the Kuching-Samarahan and Kuching-Serian expressways.

A statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said Abang Johari was in Nanchang, China to view the deployment of the ART system that formed part of the city’s urban transportation solution.

With the implementation of the urban transportation solution for greater Kuching now almost definite, CMO said the Sarawak government was exploring the options of employing the latest train technology that could possibly be cheaper to implement.
