KUCHING: Sarawak’s Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) officially commenced the second stage of its Proof of Concept (POC) test at Kuching Isthmus yesterday.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who officiated at the launch earlier, stressed that the state government is investing in a sustainable public transport transformation tailored to Sarawak’s unique needs, rather than following the model of Kuala Lumpur.
“We are not necessarily following the footsteps of Kuala Lumpur. We are establishing Sarawak’s own model which is convenient to the public based on what we need.
“We will also have hydrogen powered feeder bus that ensures first and last mile connectivity, which is more suitable for our needs compared to Kuala Lumpur’s minibus system,” he said.
He made these remarks during a press conference held after the second stage of the ART POC test at the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Tower 2 here today.
Abang Johari assured the public that the ART would offer a special rate at its commercial launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the aim of encouraging more people to use public transportation.
“We will decide on the fare, and there won’t be a burden because it is meant for the public,” he stressed.
He also highlighted the advantages of using the ART, including flexible and affordable mobility within Kuching, its tourist-friendly features, and consistent fare structures.
“We plan to implement S PAY global, eliminating the need for passengers to carry cash, which will enhance the overall comfort of the ART system.
“There are numerous benefits, which is why the state government is investing in this public transport transformation.
“In the long run, it will also help develop housing estates where public transport is both comfortable and convenient for the public,” he added.
