KUCHING: Sarawak’s Azlan Mos has set a new national record in the men’s individual powerlifting category under 65kg (best lift) with a lift of 171kg.

He surpassed the previous national record holder of 170kg held by Paralympian Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, earning a gold medal for Sarawak at the Para (Sukma) Malaysia Games today (Sept 26).

Azlan told the media that he had to overcome various challenges during training to achieve this record-breaking goal.

“I encountered various challenges in terms of training and injuries, but that’s common. The important thing is to have a strong mindset to achieve what you desire.

“Especially the nervousness. Of course, we all get nervous when facing something new, but don’t let it overwhelm you; try to control it.

Despite his success, he acknowledged that some individuals doubted his aspirations in the sport.

“For me, it’s best not to pay attention. Let it go in one ear and out the other,” he added.

Muhammad Akmal Danish Mohamad Supi from Perak took home the silver medal with a total lift of 425kg, achieving a best lift of 143kg.

He was followed by Muhamad Syalqi Mohd Shikri from Perlis, who won bronze with a total lift of 333kg and a best lift of 116kg.
