KUCHING: Sarawak has talented and potential divers, says Shi Yang, the head coach of Sarawak’s diving team.

Shi Yang, a coach from China who has dedicated six years to coaching in Sarawak, said that he has seen exceptional talent and potential among Sarawak’s divers.

This was the primary reason he chose to coach in Sarawak instead of Negeri Sembilan.

“Previously, I was a coach in Negeri Sembilan… When I was in Kuching six years ago, I noticed that Sarawak’s divers had great potential in the sport of diving.

“Therefore, I wanted to come here to teach them and help them achieve their best performance,” he told when interviewed recently at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre here.

The aquatic events concluded yesterday with Sarawak’s diving team nearly sweeping all gold medals at the 21st Sukma, securing nine gold medals.

The team’s outstanding performance also saw the state clinch three silver medals and two bronze, marking a historic moment for Sarawak in this prestigious biennial national event.

When asked about the performance of Sarawak’s athletes, he expressed pride in the team’s achievements.

“They performed exceptionally well, but there is still room for improvement, especially in terms of stability during dives,” he said.

Regarding the mental preparation of athletes, Shi Yang noted the importance of relaxed games and psychological discussions to help them maintain calm during competitions.

“We ensure they are not under pressure and remain calm during events,” he added.

He also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak government, the Sarawak State Sports Council, and the Sarawak Sports Corporation, which continuously provide full support for diving in the state, including facilities and funding.

“With strong dedication and support, I believe that diving in Sarawak will continue to grow and produce more talented divers in the future,” he said.
