MIRI: Sarawak’s fencing squad is setting its sights on reaching the semi-finals in the Malaysia Games (Sukma 2024), according to Datuk Dennis Ngau, the assistant chef de mission for the state’s contingent.

Speaking about the team’s prospects, Dennis expressed optimism but also highlighted the need for the squad to refine their skills further.

“We are hopeful. Although we didn’t achieve our goals today, I believe we still have a chance in the next two to three days,” he said.

Dennis noted that the challenges facing the team extend beyond just technical skills.

“It’s not just about city or countryside differences; there’s also the matter of the cost of training and equipment. While we can manage, more needs to be done to promote fencing among our youth,” he stated.

He noted that Sarawakians possess natural strength, and with the right exposure to the sport, they could excel.

“I believe that if our children are exposed to fencing, they have a chance. We hope to achieve our goals, whether it be in the semi-finals or finals.”

Dennis praised the team’s dedication, noting their rigorous training regimen. “The team has been preparing hard, training every day before dawn. I am confident they will surprise us with their performance.”

Regarding the venue for the fencing competition in Miri, he acknowledged some complaints but downplayed their significance.

“Some athletes might prefer other locations, but overall, the environment here is conducive to the game. It’s a bit hot, but the atmosphere is good.”

He concluded by expressing hope for the squad’s success, stating, “We are doing our best, and I believe the team’s performance so far shows promise.”
