KUCHING: Sarawak’s endeavours in green transition took centre stage at the World Green and Sustainability Summit 2024.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abg Hipni has shared an insight into the established plans of the Sarawak government’s efforts to transition to renewable energy.
In a keynote address, he asserted that Sarawak is actively pursuing initiatives such as hydropower development, solar and floating solar, wind energy, wave kinetic energy, and green hydrogen development.
“These initiatives also include bioenergy, synthetic fuels, e-methanol, carbon capture utilisation and storage, biofuel, and sustainable aviation fuels.
“All of these efforts directly contribute to reducing our carbon footprint and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
“Additionally, they generate new revenues for Sarawak and Malaysia,” he was quoted as saying.
The summit, held on Tuesday (June 25) in Georgetown, Penang, centred on accelerating the United Nations (UN)‘s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting green transition and renewable energy.
The event also emphasised the importance of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, the circular economy, green investments, and the development of green cities and smart mobility.
A key focus of the summit was advancing the 4Ps—planet, people, prosperity, and partnership—to enhance climate action.
It also promoted the Asia Pacific Green Deal for Business, an initiative of the UN ESCAP Sustainable Business Network (ESBN), and strongly advocated for public-private partnerships to achieve green growth for a sustainable, inclusive, and better world.
In addition, the summit addressed strategic issues and key challenges in fostering partnerships for climate action, energy transition, and sustainable investments.
Discussions highlighted the business community’s role in green growth and green finance, as well as best practices in the circular economy and ESG.
Also present were the president of the Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, Tan Sri Michael Yeoh and Penang former chief Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon.
