SARAWAK has achieved a high immunisation rate despite its vast and difficult terrain.
Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said this was a tremendous achievement considering over 40 per cent of the state’s population could be found in rural villages and longhouses, and had been fully vaccinated.
“As of May 20 this year, 83 per cent of the whole population, or 2,343,667 Sarawakians, had received two doses of the vaccine.
“In terms of age groups, 91.1 per cent of the population aged 18 years and above (1,881,213 people) and 93.9 per cent of the population aged 12 to 17 years (271,465 people) have been fully vaccinated.
“Meanwhile, only 66.8 per cent of the population aged five to 11 years (190,989 people) have been fully vaccinated,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
He pointed out that his ministry aimed to fully immunise 80 per cent of the children by the end of June, 2022.
Dr Sim noted that Sarawak had given the first booster dose to 89.5 per cent of the eligible population or 1,643,621 people.
As of May 19, he said a total of 5,515 eligible people had received the second booster dose.
