THE hydrogen buses have been on a journey of success, with their ridership steadily climbing, having carried a total of 57,765 passengers from September 2020 to March 2024.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin stated that the average monthly ridership from January 2024 to April 2024 reached 1,869 passengers, reflecting a notable increase of 27.14 per cent compared to the same period in 2023, which saw an average of 1,470 passengers per month.
“The increase is attributed to the rising public awareness of the hydrogen bus service and active requests for chartering special events, signifying the positive impact of these buses on local transportation,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech on Monday (May 13).
During the operations of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Project, the hydrogen feeder buses will be integrated with the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system to provide last-mile connectivity, thereby enhancing passenger accessibility within urban areas.
“It plays a crucial role in improving the overall KUTS interconnectivity and promoting sustainable urban mobility.
“With Sarawak’s venture into hydrogen as a renewable energy and the Sarawak government’s commitment to green mobility, the procurement of hydrogen feeder buses in stages over the coming years will signify a significant stride towards sustainable urban transportation.”
