HYOGO: Sarawak is committed to being at the forefront of the hydrogen industry, which is poised to play a transformative role in the global energy landscape.
In connection with this commitment, Sarawak’s collaboration with leading technology players such as Mitsubishi Power, alongside robust research and development efforts, is essential to fully harness hydrogen’s potential and drive sustainable growth in the region.
“Strategic discussions between Sarawak’s delegation and Mitsubishi Power’s leadership also focused on collaborative opportunities and initiatives to strengthen Sarawak’s hydrogen ecosystem,” Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said today (Dec 19).
Earlier, the Premier and his delegation visited the Takasago Hydrogen Park.
He was accompanied by his deputies, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry, and Investment Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, and Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
This visit marked a pivotal step in aligning Sarawak’s hydrogen aspirations with Mitsubishi Power’s advanced hydrogen technologies.
The delegation reviewed the integrated hydrogen value chain at the facility and gained insights into next-generation hydrogen production technologies, including the hydrogen combustion verification process in advanced gas turbines.
This historic visit underscores the shared commitment between Sarawak and Mitsubishi Power to advance the hydrogen ecosystem and build local capacity to support the state’s energy aspirations.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd GTCC Business Division, Energy Systems Senior General Manager Takuya Murase, expressed his honor in hosting the Premier and his delegation at the Takasago Hydrogen Park.
“Mitsubishi Power is dedicated to providing technological expertise and support as Sarawak pursues its ambition to develop a hydrogen-based economy,” he said.
As part of its continued support for Sarawak’s energy development, Mitsubishi Power recently supplied a 500MW hydrogen-ready gas turbine for the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant, operated by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS).
The project, which commenced in October 2024, features a gas turbine capable of burning fuel containing up to 30 per cent hydrogen, making it the state’s most advanced power generation facility.
The Takasago Hydrogen Park, established in 2022, integrates the development, demonstration, and validation of hydrogen production, storage, and utilization technologies at a single location.
The facility also conducts hydrogen combustion equipment testing at the T-Point 2 combined-cycle power plant verification site, designed for long-term testing of new technologies.
Mitsubishi Power is the energy solutions brand under Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd (MHI).
