KUCHING: Sarawakian Mohammad Hariz Afnan Sulhie, 17, has been selected to represent Malaysia at the upcoming ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 Asia Qualifier.
Mohammad Hariz, a student of SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman Kuching, will participate in the tournament held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from Feb 24 to March 2.
The national squad, led by experienced coach Damith Kushan Warusavithana, includes some young talents from several states such as Mohamad Aras Azmi, Muhammad Syahir Syamael, Muhammad Akram, Haziq Haikal, Muhammad Hairil, Muhammad Azri Azhar, Hamzah Panggi, Muhammad Aiman Zaquan, Mohamad Faiz Fitri, Muhammad Aalif, Sidharth Neelakantan, Shivnarin Rahul and Sidhart Karthik.
The country’s youth team flew to Sri Lanka on Tuesday (Feb 7) to undergo their pre-tournament preparation for the prestigious championship.
Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA) president Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamed expressed his delight and congratulated Mohammad Hariz.
“He has enormous talent and can help the national squad to qualify for the next stage.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) for their support in the cricket development programme in Sarawak,” said Awang Mahyan.
Meanwhile, Sarawak cricket head coach Parmuka Sidesh Liyanage said his young charge’s selection was a huge honour for SCA.
The national squad will face teams such as Singapore, Kuwait, Nepal and hosts UAE in the qualifying round.
