SIBU: The Northern Zone contingent continued its dominance in the Sarawak Games (SUKSAR) III being held here by adding 10 more gold medals, leading other zones on the second day of the sports event with a total of 20 golds so far.
The Northern Zone, represented by athletes from the Miri, Bintulu, and Limbang regions, increased their gold medal collection by winning five categories in weightlifting, three in karate, and two in taekwondo.
The contingent’s top position was further solidified as their silver medal count increased to 20 from 15 earned today, in addition to 14 more bronze medals, bringing their total collection to 26.
The Central Zone, comprising Sibu, Mukah and Kapit, secured second overall position with 16 gold, 18 silver, and 23 bronze medals. The Southern Zone (Kuching, Samarahan, and Serian) moved into third position with 15 gold, 15 silver and 14 bronze medals.
The Western Zone (Betong, Sri Aman, and Sarikei) stood at the fourth position with three gold, one silver, and 14 bronze medals.
SUKSAR, which began here on Monday (Jan 15), is a state-level sports event serving as preparation for Sarawak’s participation in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024, hosted by the state from Aug 17 to 24. SUKSAR will continue until tomorrow (Jan 18). – BERNAMA
