Sarawak’s robotic team wins third place

MUKAH: Sarawak’s robotic team which was represented by Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) St Patrick, Mukah won third place at the National-level Robotic Competition 2019 in Kedah on Monday.

The three-day competition from Sept 21 to 23, themed ‘Smart Cities’ was held at Stadium Sultan Abdul Halim, Alor Setar. The team, comprising Daniel Tay Hong Yong, Alphonsus Velariey Takin and Muhd Irfan Syahmi Ramli, competed in the Regular Rookie Upper Smart Grid category.

They took home RM1,000 cash voucher, a trophy and certificate.

Teacher-in-charge Ismandi Dillah said the team was satisfied with the result as they did not return home empty-handed. “We managed to win one of the top three spots which saw a total of 15 teams competing in the category,” he told New Sarawak Tribune upon arriving in Kuala Lumpur from Alor Setar, Kedah yesterday.
He thanked and congratulated the students for their efforts and achievement.

He added that the competition helped to develop critical thinking among the participants, in terms of solving problems while understanding the concept of science, technology and design through creating and programming robots.

Ismandi revealed that a total of 1,144 participants from 286 teams took part in the competition which was divided into five categories.
He also thanked the school, especially principal Anthony Poon Teck Huat, teachers, students and parents for their motivation, support and prayers as well as the donors who had assisted them in realising their dreams.
