BINTULU: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government’s efforts to increase the state’s revenue through various diversifying and reengineering efforts are for the people.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state continues to pave the way in its transition to a new economy that focuses on green energy and utilises the latest technology to exploit its abundance of resources.
“During the recent national Gawai Dayak celebration, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told me that Sarawak is so advanced that the federal government is left behind.
“This is owing to our policies and initiatives in the efforts to reduce carbon emissions on the planet as well as to generate more income for the state.
“During the recent Unity Government National Convention 2023, I highlighted the importance of having economic reform to compete with other countries in the world because we need to observe and subsequently adapt to the changing conditions,” he said.
He said this in his address during the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) triennial general assembly (TGA) 2023 today (June 11) at the Dinner World Restaurant here.
Abang Johari said one of the state government’s ambitions is to provide free tertiary education to Sarawakians, so it is important to ensure that the state has a strong financial standing.
In 2022, Sarawak recorded RM11.9 billion in revenue, which is the highest revenue performance ever achieved by the state.
He also said the state’s sovereign wealth fund will start next year to safeguard future generations.
“We are grateful for this achievement, and in the first quarter of this year, we recorded RM5 billion in revenue.
“However, we will not spend all our money because we must also save and be prudent,” he said.
