SIBU: Sarikei MP Wong Ling Biu of DAP has been tested positive for Covid-19 early yesterday.
Wong has not been feeling well since a week ago and was admitted to Sibu Hospital on March 7 as patient under investigation (PUI).
He was said to have attended a political gathering in Kuala Lumpur from February 29 until March 2 before flying back to Sibu. Wong has been the MP for Sarikei since 2013.
Sarawak Health director Dr Chin Zin Hing confirmed that Wong had been hospitalised.
Meanwhile, Sibu Division Health Officer Dr Teh Jo Hoon when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune on Sunday advised anyone who had been in contact with the Sarikei MP from February 22 till March 13 and has symptoms of cough, fever, runny nose or sore throat to come forward to the nearest clinic or hospital.
Dr Teh also advised individuals here who attended the religious gathering at the Sri Petaling Mosque in Kuala Lumpur from Feb 27 to March 1 which was attended by an estimated 10,000 people, including foreigners to get their health checked at the local clinics or hospital.
“Most of the participants from Sibu who took part in the gathering have been traced and were told to self-quarantine for 14 days,” he said.
He also appealed to the participants of the religious congregation to come forward for a health screening and to have their temperature checked.
Dr Teh hoped that the people would not panic as a result of the arising number of Covid-19 cases.
He reminded people to sanitise their hands regularly and practise social distancing in public gatherings, such as no handshakes or touching others.
