KUCHING: Six satellite towns will be developed within the Greater Kuching area.
Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) chief executive officer Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik revealed that satellite towns will be established for the purpose of economic opportunities for locals.
“There is a proposal to establish a new township between the junction of Lundu and Sematan, just after the Centre of Technical Excellence (CENTEX) Lundu,” he said in an interview with New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
“The second one is the Rural Growth Centre (RGC) Opar, located before the Batang Kayan Bridge. We will also convert the area into a rest and recreation centre along the Pan Borneo Highway.
“Thirdly, there is also the development of RGC at Bayur in Padawan, which is long overdue,” he said.
Apart from that, Ik mentioned the plan to develop Paku town into a food packaging and processing hub in the Serembu state constituency.
He also said that Tebedu will be turned into an economic hub to leverage on the development of the Tebedu Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex.
Lastly, he said that there will be a new township in the Balai Ringin state constituency.
“With all the satellite towns and other basic amenities, this would cost more than RM20 million.
“These satellite towns will have shoplots, open markets for the locals to sell jungle produce, multipurpose halls, open concert areas and also internet connections as well,” he added.
He said a lot of work would have to be done as they need to appoint consultants for the projects, identify the sites and look into purchasing of lands.
IIk stated that it would take more than two years for these projects to complete.
