SBC’s organic chicken feed wins recognition at mini convention

KUCHING: The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre’s (SBC) BioBegonia team recently achieved a credible third placing at the Innovative and Creative Circle (ICC) Mini Convention organised by the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talend Development.

Their project titled ‘Circular Economy Initiative: Recycle Litsea cubeba Plant Waste for Sustainable Animal Feed’ stood out for its innovation and commitment to environmental conservation.

“The BioBegonia team repurposed the Litsea cubeba waste products after its essential oil was extracted as supplement for chicken feed. This contributes to both environmental and animal feed sustainability.

“Their innovation in creating a valuable addictive for animal food showcases the Innovative Creative Circle spirit of the team,” it said in a social media post.

In another post, SBC said it welcomed a delegate from Japan who are on a study visit to Chitose Carbon Capture Central Sarawak (C4).

C4 Sarawak is the world’s first large-scale microalgae production facility based on flat panel photobioreactor (PBR) that is funded by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO).

The Japanese delegation was led by NEDO general director of Bioeconomy Promotion Division, Materials Technology and Nanotechnology Dr Katsuro Yaoi.

“The delegation was briefed on microalgae research including SBC’s milestone in achieving over 600 living microalgae collection, algae cultivation facility of 81m2 and 1,000m2 which later became the proof of concept to C4 Sarawak’s setup,” it said.

SBC also said it is looking forward to continuing partnering with Japanese groups who are interested in microalgae research and commercialization.
