Over 10,000 people visited the two-day Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Carnival.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil lauded the efforts of the Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas) team and the Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Ministry for orchestrating the largest career and education carnival ever held in Sarawak.

“This widespread support, spanning regions, showcased an unwavering commitment reminiscent of previous SCaT editions,” he said at the closing ceremony of the carnival at Wisma Sabati here on Sunday (Nov 26).

The SCaT Carnival, established with the primary objective of reshaping public perceptions and fostering interest, particularly among Sarawak’s youth in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), has evolved over the years.

Jerip said initiatives such as Youth Got Skills and the Sarawak Fashion Awards, along with educational and career exhibitions, marked its early years.

“In 2016, aligning with the vision to nurture highly skilled individuals in technology, the carnival expanded with programmes like STEM Playground.

“This aimed to cultivate students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to prepare the new generation for the broader and more complex challenges of Industry 4.0.

“However, the unforeseen disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 led to the suspension of public engagement events, including the SCaT Fair,” he said.

After a two-year hiatus, the SCaT Carnival returned this year, and the collaborative efforts of Tegas and the ministry proved fruitful.

This year, the carnival featured 30 agencies participating in an open interview organised by the Social Security Organisation (Socso), along with 30 local and external educational institutions and 10 financial aid agencies.

In addition to career and education exhibitions, the carnival also featured several competitions such as TVET Battlefield, Youth Talent Stage, Borneo Makers Festival, and Junior Innovate & Young Innovator Challenge.

Jerip also said that this year was the first time the SCaT Carnival extended beyond Kuching, reaching Miri in October.

“This is a positive step, as residents outside Kuching can also experience the warmth of this carnival. I hope that in future editions, the carnival can be held in many more areas,” he added.
