KUCHING: Eighteen students from four schools in Kuching received the RENG Scholarship Award yesterday held at the Tan Sri Datuk William Tan Auditorium, SMK St Joseph.
The scholarship was awarded to nine students from SMK St Joseph, two students from SMK St Thomas, five students from SMK St Teresa and two students from SMK St Mary.
The “RENG Education Preview and Scholarship Award Presentation” ceremony is an initiative by RENG College to expand their reach here.
Among those present were Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong, Principal of SMK St Joseph Henry Chai, and RENG College Founder, Datuk Ar. Richard Eng.
In his speech, Manyin said: “Most of us probably have dreams, talents, future and the means required to reach our goals but unfortunately the world is never equal.
“Sarawak is a vast state, but the rural community has limited access to education. There is a gap here – such is the inequality.”
Manyin also revealed his past experience on the early education period in the state as the facilities at that time were limited.
“If we look at Singapore, the education system is like a policy for their citizen. Through progress, their policy changes over time.
“Nowadays, things are different. Rather than stressing on the needs of the academic syllabus, educators need to reach out to their students in other aspects,” he said.
He added that by reaching out to the students, they could guide the student’s development in the ever-changing society.
