SIBU: Education is of paramount importance to the development of the country, stressed Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
In this respect, he hoped his alma mater, SJK (C) Thai Kwang could provide complete education to the students.
“Complete education here means covering the field of emotions and abilities.
“Complete education will better prepare our students to face the challenges of today’s modern age,” he stated when addressing at the SJK (C) Thai Kwang’s 90th anniversary celebration dinner held at RH hotel here on Wednesday night.
His text of speech in Mandarin was read by his representative, Joshua Fu Ting, who is the youth chief of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Bawang Assan Branch.
Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP, said that although English language was still important, Mandarin should also be emphasised because China’s economy was growing rapidly.
“If our students can master both Chinese and English, that is the best.
“By mastering both languages, they will be able to prepare themselves to face future challenges,” he added.
Meanwhile, Tiong, a primary one pupil of SJK (C) Thai Kwang in 1968, also announced a grant of RM200,000 for the school which was established in 1932.
A cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the school as well as the presentation of long service awards to those school teaching staff for no less than 10 years were also held.
Chairman of the school Board of Management Datuk Tiong Thai King, Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew, Lanang MP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, Sibu District Education Officer Ahli Chikba and the event’s organising chairman Kapitan Tiong Chong Ting were among those present.
