KUCHING: Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJK C) Chung Hua Pangkalan Baru emerged champion for the primary school category of the poster design competition at the second leg of F&N ‘Recycle For A Life Cycle Day’ in conjunction with F&N Recycle Campaign 2020, here and in Kota Samarahan.
The event was held at the Old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) in Petra Jaya, yesterday.
The winning team, comprised of 12-year-old Peter Archyllouise, Yuki Cheong Ke Xin (11), Voon Poh Joo (11), Amelia Chen Ted Lin (11) and Kuan Siew Ting (11), walked away with RM500 cash prize.
The team was also awarded a three-day and one-night educational trip to the ECO Recycling Plaza, Petaling Jaya which consists of a visit to a paper mill, a recycling centre and an upcycling factory for beverage cartons, which allows students to learn more about environmental conservation and bridge the gap between recycling education and hands-on experience.
Present to hand over the prize to the winner was Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan.
According to the team, they had no idea that the competition required the participants to use watercolour as a designing tool.
“Prior to the competition, we underwent three hours of practice after the school session. During the practice, we used crayons as a colouring tool and we are able to finish designing in just two hours.
“But upon arriving at the competition, we found out that we would be using watercolours instead, so this posed as a challenge for us as we are not used in using watercolours,” Peter told New Sarawak Tribune after the event.
He further mentioned that amongst the recycled materials included to design the poster were paper, bottle cap, plastic and aluminium.
The accompanying teachers of the team were Lee Yan Yam and Chen Kiaw Joo.
Meanwhile, the school’s headmistress Jong Siaw Hui said the school has always been supportive and held high importance of recycling programmes.
“We conduct school cleaning and decoration as well as hydroponic gardening amongst the students to nurture the attitude of caring for the environment.
“We also worked very closely with Trienekens Sdn Bhd and Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) in programmes relating to environmental and recycling,” she said.
In addition, the school will be going to Miri in April to receive the state-level Bintang Serasi (Sekolah Rakan Alam Sekitar) special award for last year’s competition organised by Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB).
Last year, the school also won second place for collection of recycled materials competition held by Fraser & Neave Holdings Berhad (F&NHB).
The event also witnessed SJK(C) Chung Hua 2 won second place while SK Garland finished in third. Both schools were awarded RM400 and RM300 respectively.
Other competing schools were SK Wira Jaya, SK Jalan Haji Baki, SK Semenggok, SK Matang, SJK(C) Chung Hua 3, SK Jln Ong Tiang Swee, SK Laksamana, SK Rancangan Rakyat RPR and SK Combined.
