School expects to raise RM70,000 in concert

A choir singing in action.

KUCHING: As part of their efforts to raise money to build a new block of classrooms and a hall, SMK St Teresa held a Sonorama concert.

The concert meaning ‘musical performances and festivals’, also aimed to showcasing the students’ talents from the Bando, Choir, and Cultural (Dance) Clubs which was held at the ACCPC Grand Hall here on Friday night.

According to the school principal, Mary John, they expected to raise RM70,000 from the concert through sales of tickets and contribution from three main sponsors; Tokio Marine Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad, RHB Insurance Berhad, and AmGeneral Insurance Berhad.

“At this point, the school has raised a total amount of RM2.9 million which includes contributions from the state government, private institutions and organisations, personal donors, and various fund-raising activities organised by the school, Parent-Teachers’ Association (PIBG) and Old Teresian Association.

“We hope to get more support from the public and raise another RM5.3 million to meet the target.

“More fund-raising activities will be organised in the near future until the necessary amount needed is met,” she said.

The night was filled with fun-filled performances by not only the school’s students, but also with help from students from SMK St Joseph and LayNa Ballet Academy.

There were various performances; such as choir performances of a medley of ‘The Sound Of Music’, dance performances, and band performances of classics like ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ and ‘Phantom Of The Opera’.

On 29 October last year tragedy in the form of a fire struck the school which caused it to need RM8.2 million in order to repair what was destroyed in the fire.
