KUCHING: A total of 216 students from Form 1 to Form 5 at SMK Batu Lintang here including some non-Chinese students took part in a Chinese calligraphy competition held at the school recently.
The event was jointly organised by the school’s parent-teacher association (PTA) and its Chinese language committee.
The teacher-in-charge, Pang Soon Choi, explained that the event which was marked the launch of the school’s language month, was also a way of promoting the writing of Chinese calligraphy and couplets in connection with the coming Chinese New Year (CNY).
To him, the competition was ideal for cultural exchanges between ethnic groups.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, the president of the PTA Lee Kiat Ming was pleased that the teachers and students of the school organised the competition to promote a part of Chinese culture in the form of calligraphy.
He thought that practising calligraphy could help sharpen the mind and train students to be patient and push them to perform well academically.
The school principal, Bahtiar Afandi, in his speech advised the students to cherish the opportunity to learn Chinese language and calligraphy in order to elevate their knowledge.
He encouraged students from other ethnic groups to also learn Chinese language and culture so as to help develop a harmonious multi-ethnic Malaysian nation that is united and prosperous.
