BINTULU: A nine-month wait has come to an end with the partial reopening of Jalan Kemena 2 Jalan SMK Baru here.
Another portion of the road is still not fully completed, according to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
But the partial reopening, though long awaited, has also raised concerns, especially with associated amenities still not available along the stretch.
Tanjung Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang has therefore requested Sarawak Energy to speed up works on installing street lights and traffic lights.
“These facilities are for the teachers, students and parents who send their children to school.
“I have also asked the principal to apply to the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to make two road humps for the safety of the students.
“Even though there are already yellow lines they are afraid motorists won’t see them,” he said while visiting Jalan Kemena 2, Jalan SMK Baru recently.
Pang also advised all road users to slow down when approaching the school area.
School principal, Fatimah Wan Adini, said vehicles passing by SMK Baru tend to speed and this worried the school management.
“After this road is opened today, it was found that parents still lack awareness and I hope they are more sensitive, especially in relation to the issue of children’s safety,” she said.
