KAPIT: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Nanga Bena, Sungai Sut, which was nearly 100 per cent submerged due to a recent flash flood, has received RM40,000 in aid to assist with recovery efforts.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that he, along with Pelagus Assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang, contributed RM30,000 and RM10,000 respectively, to assist the school in cleaning efforts and the purchase of essential supplies for students at the affected school.
During his visit to assess the situation, Nanta lamented that simple repairs would not be sufficient to restore the dilapidated school, which serves children from remote areas.
He stressed the need to rebuild SK Nanga Bena, given the severe damage to the school buildings, dormitories, and staff quarters caused by the floodwaters.
“I cannot imagine the fear and hardship faced by more than 30 students, along with their teachers and staff, who were asleep when the flood struck.
“The original structure of the school, built in 1963, could no longer withstand such severe natural disasters.
“The lives of the children, teachers, and staff here must be prioritised,” he said.
Nanta shared his concerns in a Facebook post today.
In addition to visiting SK Nanga Bena, the local MP also inspected SK Rantau Panjai, another school affected by the floods.
He donated RM5,000 to the school to address immediate needs.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all the teams involved in rescuing the flood victims at both locations and for assisting in the swift cleanup efforts.
“As the Kapit MP, I will do my utmost to secure the best possible facilities for the children and teachers here,” he added.
