SIBU: A total of 28 Year One students who will begin the new school term next week received school bags and stationery from the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bukit Assek service centre here Tuesday.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the donation of school bags and stationery was an annual activity of his service centre under the ‘I Love Bukit Assek’ campaign.
“We want to reduce the financial burden on parents, especially ahead of the new school term session next week, where they have to buy school uniforms, bags, exercise books and so on.
“This is a big burden, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. As a representative, I want to help voters or B40 families to reduce their burden,” he told reporters after the donation presentation at the service centre.
According to Chieng, the donation was given to families in the B40 category, where one of their parents is a voter in the Bukit Assek constituency, with 100 Year One students targeted to receive the donation this year.
“In addition to this programme, we also provide educational incentives to Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) students who excel in their public examinations.
“Last year we allocated RM130,000 for this incentive to 260 SPM students and more than 80 STPM and UEC students,” he said, adding that the incentive will continue this year.
Besides helping school students, he said, his service centre also provides financial assistance to the elderly and people with disabilities (OKU).
“This is a series of Bukit Assek Service Centre programmes under the ‘I Love Bukit Assek’ Campaign with the purpose of helping the people in the constituency,” Chieng added.
