SIBU: Wong Nai Siong Secondary School here will be holding a charity food sale at its basketball court on May 5 from 7.30am to noon.
This is an annual event by the school to raise funds and address its financial shortfall in running the school.
Chairman of the school board of management Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming told a press conference yesterday that the school had 840 students.
“A lot of our students come from poor families. As they cannot afford paying for the tuition fees, we have to exempt them from doing so. As a result, every year we run into a deficit of RM1 million,” he explained.
One of the ways to raise funds for the school was to organise an annual charity food sale, Lau said.
“Our target is to raise RM100,000 so we are calling on the community to support us by either buying the food coupons or sponsoring the food and drink items for sale,” he said.
Another objective of the event, Lau said, was to give the public the opportunity to visit the school so that they could understand how it was being run.
“During the event, the public can interact with the board of management, teachers and students so that they will be able to know the school better,” he added.
The food coupons, priced at RM2, RM3, RM5 and RM10 a piece, are now being sold by students from all the 23 classes.
Students who sell the most coupons will be rewarded with RM400 for the first prize, RM150 (second prize), RM100 (third prize) and 10 consolation prizes of RM50 each.
The winners must sell a minimum of 800 coupons.
Present at the press conference were principal Lu Yew Hiiung and organising chairman of the charity food sale Kong Chung Meng.
