KUCHING: A total of RM85,000 has been allocated for the implementation of the STEM programme which includes three phases with the first two phases at SMK Tebedu, and the third phase at SMK Taee.
The programme aimed to enhance teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics through fun learning activities.
It also aimed to instil the Y generation’s interest in engineering and robotics into the 21st century learning as well as foster higher thinking skills among students.
Through this programme, gaps between urban and rural students were bridged and provided students with early exposure to education with university diplomas and degrees as well as job opportunities in government, GLCs and the private sector.
Among the activities carried out were Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB)’s motivational talks, hydrogen car demonstrations and test monitoring by SEB, Kit Mola, robot teleporting, box variables, and Uniten booth exhibits.
Participants were also presented with video promotions, Stem kits (VR boxes and solar car kits), facilitator T-shirts, mini-game prizes, real life experiences in Stem kits and hydrogen cars, explored learning and career opportunities as engineers and computer scientists at Uniten.
The modules included are reusable and would benefit rural teachers and students.
The packages could also be modified according to the Education Ministry’s specifications and the government is targeting three schools in 2019, with a total of 300 students taking part in Stem.
The programme was organised by Batu Lintang Teachers’ College (IPBL), Uniten, Uniten Foundation Counselor, SEB and SMK Tebedu with 100 participating students aged 16 and 17.
Also participated were were 20 trainee teachers from IPBL, KBL members from the Stem club, 11 facilitators from Uniten, eight facilitators from IPBL, KBL and four SEB staff.
