KUCHING: Sarawak Consolidated Industries Berhad (SCIB) yesterday organised a site visit to its factory in Kuching to showcase its 3D construction printer, which will be used in SCIB’s construction projects.
The visitors comprised Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB Malaysia) deputy chief executive Datuk Ir. Elias Ismail and representatives from its subsidiary, Akademi Binaan Malaysia Wilayah Sarawak (ABM).
The 3D construction printer arrived in Malaysia in September of this year, and SCIB is currently collaborating with CIDB on research and development (R&D) in the hopes of establishing standards and regulations for 3D printing buildings and structures in the country.
SCIB chief executive officer Rosland Othman said that the 3D construction printer would be used as part of SCIB’s expansion strategy.
“We believe that having a 3D construction printer at our disposal will allow us to shorten the construction period for our projects, allowing us to complete them in less time.
“SCIB is actively collaborating with CIDB Malaysia to promote this technology to the Public Works Department (JKR) and many other relevant authorities, as we believe it will improve the efficiency and productivity of the Malaysian construction industry,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 30).
SCIB purchased the 3D construction printer and the design software from Cobod International (Cobod), a manufacturing company based In Denmark that was responsible for constructing one of Europe’s first 3D printed buildings.
“Presently, our engineering team is installing and commissioning the 3D construction printer with assistance from Cobod through visual communication.
“After successfully commissioning the 3D construction printer, we hope to be able to demonstrate the latest technology by building a mock-up 3D printed house at CIDB Sarawak’s headquarters site, with the demonstration to take place sometime in November 2021,” he added.
