SIBU: Sibu and Miri are among Singapore’s Scoot airline’s first six Southeast Asian destinations its new Embraer E190-E2 aircraft will fly to from the middle of this year.
In a statement, state Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin thanked Scoot for agreeing to the state’s request to increase flights to Sarawak.
“I am happy to note that flights between Kuching and Singapore will be increased from seven to 10 flights starting May 5 and Miri from three to four times weekly starting May 20, with Sibu three times weekly starting June 7
“I thank Scoot for working closely with my ministry and with the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS) and Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) to promote Sarawak in Singapore.
“I am confident that with more marketing and promotions by all stakeholders together, Scoot will be able to operate more flights to Sarawak.
“Personally I can foresee that there is a great growth potential in both business and tourists travel between Singapore and Sarawak and vice versa,” he said
In the meantime, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang said the initiative is part of the effort from STATOS in promoting flight connectivity between Singapore and major cities in Sarawak.
“Since AirAsia cancelled the routes to Sibu and Miri from Singapore, I had been working closely STATOS in seeking alternative airlines that are willing to take up the cancelled routes by AirAsia.
“And thanks to STATOS, Scoot decided to create the Singapore-Sibu and Singapore-Miri routes,” he said.
Scoot recently unveiled its first six Southeast Asian destinations namely Koh Samui, Sibu, Hat Yai, Kuantan, Krabi, and Miri .
