KUCHING: Scout leaders should choose at least 10 per cent of troop members each year for the King Scout Award.
The Chief Scout Commissioner of Sarawak, Captain Zainuddin Tan Sri Hamdan said that this would increase the number of King Scouts produced in Sarawak.
He added that if 10 percent of the scouts in the form 4 and form 5 classes were given the necessary training and qualified for the standardisation process, Sarawak could produce some 50 to 100 King Scouts each year.
According to statistics from the Sarawak Education Department, 59,599 pupils and students enrolled themselves in the school cub packs or scout troops last year.
During the centenary commemorative certificates and bars presentation ceremony at Dewan Sri Sadong, SMK Serian yesterday, Captain Zainuddin also said that the event was very timely, given the immense effort put in by all recipients to develop, promote, and expand scouting in Serian district over the years, which has made it great to usher in the 40th year of its existence in this district.
He commended Serian Scout District’s achievement, saying that it has come a long way and has emerged as a potential membership expansion district, given its long history of 40 years.
Captain Zainuddin also announced that 101 volunteer adult leaders from Serian Scout District and Sri Aman Scout District were recommended for 100th year certificates and bars.
He reminded scout leaders that there were 51 cub packs or scout troops in the district, and recruiting 40 to 50 members per group could result in over 2,000 to 2,500 scouts.
In attendance at the ceremony were Vice President of Sarawak Scout Council Col. Jumaat Ibrahim, Deputy Chief Scout Commissioner John Lim Boon Beng, Sarawak Scout Council member Arthur Lee Cheng Chuan, Scout Programme Commissioner Abang Zulfikar Abang Zaini, Serian District Scout Commissioner Edwin Talep, Sri Aman District Scout Commissioner Rid Munsih, and Executive Secretary of the Scouts Association of Malaysia Sarawak Branch Zasran Abdullah.
