KUCHING:  A hard up elderly man in the Bandar Kuching constituency has received much-needed assistance from MP Dr Kelvin Yii to alleviate his burdens.

According Dr Yii, the elderly man who presently lives in a run down house belonging to someone else earns a meager income by recycling scrap iron.

But due to the restrictions of the movement control order (MCO) and COVID-19 pandemic, he said the elderly man had not been able to recycle scrap iron as usual.

On top of that, his old van which he uses to transport his recycling items caught fire and was destroyed after it short-circuited, he said.

“So now, he cannot go out to recycle scrap iron and thus he is struggling even more,” he said in a social media post yesterday.

Dr Yii pointed out that despite these circumstances the elderly man is still trying to support himself.

In addition to recycling scrap iron as much as he can, he also grows potted plants and sells them to increase his income.

“After learning about his situation, my team and I went to visit him and provided him with food relief to relieve his urgent needs,” he said.

Dr Yii stated that he often provides assistance to the elderly through his constituency funding in the hope of reducing the burdens of this group.

“Despite our limited capacity, we will do our best to reach out to the underprivileged in our constituency and be with them through this difficult time,” he added.
