SIBU: The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) wants theatres throughout the country to screen more locally produced movies and not just foreign movies.
Speaking to reporters after a visit to King’s Trioplex here yesterday, Finas board member Onn Norshal Hamzah said that the corporation has been visiting theatres nationwide to get the operators’ cooperation to support local movies.
Onn and his entourage were received by the Trioplex manager Tang Chiok King.
“During this visit, we briefed them on the local film industry and also to see the potential for their cooperation in screening local movies,” he said.
He added that Finas was also encouraging local filmmakers and producers to produce more movies while ensuring that theatres nationwide would give the opportunity to local movies.
“With the theatres showing more local movies, it will enable us to compete with foreign movies,” he said.
When asked how Finas could go about promoting local movies, he said the corporation has a promotion programme in which it wants theatres to do early screenings of local movies and also show their trailers.
“When we visit them, we also want to gather feedback on how such cooperation could be smoothen,” said Onn.
