KUCHING: Sarawak will host a portion of the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, a move expected to enhance the state’s regional profile.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that hosting the biennial multi-sport event would elevate Sarawak’s international standing and provide a valuable platform for local athletes.
“We must begin our preparations immediately to ensure the success of this prestigious event,” he said during the Sarawak Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 Contingent incentive presentation at Riverside Majestic Hotel last night (Sept 14).
Sarawak is poised to host a portion of the Games, given its agreement to cover half of the organisational costs.
“While the costs are substantial, we are committed to co-hosting the SEA Games for the sake of sports development and our youth,” he said.
“The increased visibility from hosting the Games will undoubtedly elevate Sarawak’s status.”
Earlier, the Federal Youth and Sports Ministry and the states of Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang had agreed to co-host the 2027 SEA Games.
The estimated organisational costs for the event are RM700 million.
This will be the seventh time Malaysia has hosted the SEA Games, with previous editions held in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2017.
