SIBU: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) candidate for the Sibu parliamentary seat Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh’s grandson, Sean Wong delivered his speech at the PSB election campaign here on Thursday night.

The son of the late Datuk Andrew Wong was among the speakers invited by the party to attend the PSB political talk in conjunction with the 15th general election (GE15) which has entered the fifth day of the campaign period.

Sean, when delivering his speech, said that he is impressed by the struggle of his grandfather and also his late father who sincerely wanted to develop Sibu.

He described his grandfather as a very persistent person when he wanted to fight for something and his spirit to be successful in whatever business he wants to venture into should be emulated.

“People must be wondering why my grandfather at the age of 80 still wants to contest in the election.

“This is because he wants to fulfill my late father’s dream for Sibu,” said the 22-year-old who has just completed his Bachelor of Industrial Arts at Sarawak University of Technology (UTS).

According to Sean, his late father was the deputy chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and had many development plans for Sibu.

Among his plans was to upgrade and build roads as well as improve facilities in the town.

“Unfortunately, his dream failed to be achieved when he passed away on Feb 10, 2019, which was a great blow to our family and also a great loss to the people of Sibu.

“During his time as deputy chairman of SMC, I always saw my father with wide eyes in his study examining all important documents all night long.

“I said in my heart, that must be a heavy responsibility, otherwise, he would not have to spend so much time on them,” he said.

Sean said that when his late father had done something for Sibu, he would share his achievements with his grandfather.

Whenever his late father talked about what he had done for Sibu, Sean could see his satisfied smile, as he explained it.

“My late father always told my grandfather that there were many things to be done for Sibu. The Sibu development master plan planned by my late father could not be fulfilled and this caused my grandfather to want to continue what my late father did not have time to do,” he stressed.

Sean said that he was not familiar with politics but talked about the meaning of the legacy of the struggle that should be carried on.

He is aware that the three-cornered contest for the Sibu parliamentary seat is not an easy fight for his grandfather.

“I know my grandfather is so busy that he can’t enjoy his dinner in peace and is often in a hurry to get to his campaign programme.

“That is my grandfather’s struggle that I should emulate. No one is perfect in this world but I hope that your votes can be given to Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh and Priscilla Lau in the Lanang parliamentary seat.
