SARIKEI: A search and rescue operation is in progress for Lenya Sigat, a 62-year-old woman who went missing near Sungai Baron, here.
Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) launched the operation on Thursday (June 6), after receiving a report from the police.
“The woman’s sibling, upon noticing her absence from their home on Thursday afternoon, conducted a search with villagers at a nearby bathing spot in front of Rumah Tury.
“Unfortunately, due to worsening weather conditions, they were unable to find any trace of her,” said a Bomba spokesperson.
The family then reported her missing to the authorities today (June 7).
During their initial search, Bomba discovered a white paint can along with Lenya’s personal belongings, including soap and clothing, which had drifted downstream from the bathing spot.
A coordinated SAR operation was immediately organised, dividing the search area into four designated sectors (A, B, C, and D).
At 2.30 pm, a team consisting of three firefighters, three police officers, and twelve local villagers commenced their search in Sector A, covering a one-kilometre radius from the control post.
Despite extensive efforts, the SAR team had not located Lenya or any new leads as of 5.13 pm on Thursday.
The search has been postponed until tomorrow morning (June 8).
