KUCHING: The search and rescue (SAR) operations for the five individuals who went missing after yesterday’s boat capsizing have entered the second day (Oct 19), with 46 personnel and advanced sonar technology deployed in the coastal waters off Kuching.

Kuching police chief Mohamad Farhan Lee said the operation, which began at 6.30am, is being led by a coordinated effort between various agencies, including the Police Air Unit (PGU) and the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) to comb the area.

“The teams are divided into two groups. The first is positioned at the scene of the incident, focusing on the area where the individuals were last seen.

“The sonar team is conducting thorough scans of the seabed in that area. Meanwhile, the second group is tasked with exploring nearby passageways, as they attempt to widen the search zone,” he told a press conference.

Regular updates are scheduled to be provided to the media and the public at 8.30am, 2.00pm, and 6.00pm.

The public is urged to refrain from any speculation or unauthorised activity in the area, as the situation remains critical.

For further inquiries, the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching) can be contacted and SAR officials will be available on-site to provide updates.

On another note, Farhan advised participants in the ongoing regatta training to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols, especially regarding the use of life vests.

“I understand from the organisers that life jackets are being worn during training, with an escort team on standby. This level of preparedness is essential and should be maintained throughout the event,” he added.

A boat carrying 15 participants capsized yesterday during a regatta training session at Royal Bay Commercial Centre, Jalan Buruh Bintawa, here leaving five people missing as of yesterday evening (Oct 18).

The incident occurred at around 4.20pm when the boat, used for the training exercise, overturned. Eleven individuals managed to swim to safety, but five remain unaccounted for.
