SARIKEI: A search-and-rescue (SAR) operations is underway for an Indonesian man who is feared to have drowned at Muara Payang here.

The incident occurred around 5pm on Sunday (Dec 6) when the boat that the victim and two other locals were in overturned after it was hit by a wave which was caused by a passing ship.

The locals, who clung to an oil tank, were saved by a fisherman, who happened to be nearby during the incident.

However, the victim, identified as Heriayansyah, 25, who worked as an electrician in Sibu, was nowhere to be seen.

The operations centre of the State Fire and Rescue Department said a call from Sarikei police station was received at 7.36pm later that day requesting for assistance to locate the man.

The SAR operations began on Monday (Dec 7) at 7am by using water surface searching method within a 1-km radius from the location where the victim was believed to have gone missing.

As at press time, the search is still ongoing and the victim has yet to be found.
