KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Energy won the ‘Community Engagement & Partnerships’ award at the 2024 Malaysia Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Awards.

Sarawak Energy was one of seven winners chosen from over 600 applicants, joining other notable companies, including Bursa Malaysia and PwC Malaysia, who will advance to the Asia-Pacific WEPs Regional Awards in December 2024.

The award celebrates Sarawak Energy’s efforts in empowering women through its handicraft development programme, which supports Penan women near the Murum hydroelectric plant by preserving traditional rattan weaving skills and promoting economic independence.

The programme, a collaboration with the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) since 2016, not only sustains cultural heritage but also creates market opportunities for local crafts.

The event was hosted by UN Women during the UN Women Gender Action Lab Malaysia Summit at the Asia School of Business.

Representing Sarawak Energy at the ceremony, Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, Siti Aisah Adenan, expressed pride in the initiative, underscoring the company’s commitment to community development and gender equality.

“This programme exemplifies our dedication to sustainable social investment and meaningful partnerships with our host communities,” she said in a press release issued Saturday (Oct 26).

She added that this initiative reflects Sarawak Energy’s commitment to community development and gender equality through meaningful partnerships.

Sarawak Energy, a WEPs signatory since 2021, continues to integrate gender-inclusive practices within its operations, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and contributing to Sarawak’s vision of sustainable growth.
